Over the past year, Apple has dedicated considerable effort to this project, now expanding its internal testing and accelerating development in anticipation of a release to third-party developers potentially within the year.

Mirroring the functionality of GitHub Copilot, Apple’s new tool will leverage AI to predict and automatically complete code blocks, streamlining the software development process by saving time and reducing costs. Beyond code completion, Apple is exploring AI applications in automating the testing of applications, addressing one of the more monotonous aspects of software development. This effort includes an internal "dogfooding" campaign, ensuring these AI features meet Apple's high standards before their external launch.

Apple's push into generative AI and large language models, technologies underpinning popular platforms like ChatGPT, represents a catch-up effort within the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Under the direction of Craig Federighi, Apple’s SVP of Software Engineering, and with key contributions from Sebastien Marineau-Mes and Andreas Wendker, Apple is not only focusing on this software tool but also integrating AI features into upcoming operating system updates for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. These updates, dubbed iOS and iPadOS 18 and macOS Glow, are expected to include a variety of new AI-driven enhancements, positioning Apple as a formidable contender in the AI domain and signaling a new era of innovation in app development and beyond.
